Biographical Text

Annie Sidwell graduated from Rockford Seminary with Addams in the class of 1881. After clerking at her brother's store in Aurora IL, Sidwell began her career as a teacher, specializing in teaching the blind. She taught in Vinton, IA and then in Nebraska at the Nebraska City Institute for the Blind and the Nebraska Normal School in Lincoln. Sidwell's will stipulated that her home property is sold for the best price and the money transferred to Addams "for the payment of scholarships at Rockford College." Addams donated the $1650 to Rockford in 1908.

Sidwell died in 1907 of congestive heart failure.
