Biographical Text

Clarence S. Darrow was a lawyer and labor activist. He was a leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and an advocate for Georgist economic reform. Darrow defended Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. after they murdered fourteen year-old Bobby Franks. He also defended John T. Scopes in the Scopes Trial. Darrow was also one of America's leading labor attorneys, until he was tried for attempting to bribe jurors, after which he became a criminal lawyer. He organized the Populist Party in Illinois and ran for Congress as a Democrat in 1896.

Darrow married Jessie Ohl in 1880. They had one son. The marriage ended in divorce and Darrow married Ruby Hammerstrom in 1904. Darrow died in 1938.
