Biographical Text

Nero was the fifth Roman emperor, from 54-68 CE, and although his first five years of ruling are regarded as a general success, he soon became brutal in his governing. For a time it was commonly believed that Nero had some part in the burning of Rome in the year 64 CE, but at the time of the tragedy he was in his villa 35 miles from Rome. Nero died in 68 CE by requesting to be killed by one of his men after learning that had become a public enemy of Rome.

Nero was first married to Claudia Octavia, but divorced from her in favor of Poppaea Sabina She bore Nero's only child, Claudia Augusta. Nero's last wife was Statilia Messalina. Nero also married two men, Sporos and Pythagoras, a freedman, whom he treated as spouses although not much is known about them.
