Biographical Text

Born Elizabeth May Beatty, "Bessie" Beatty was a feminist and journalist with a varied career. She worked for the Los Angeles Herald and San Francisco Chronicle, among other newspapers and magazines. Beatty traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, visiting Japan, China and Russia in 1917, writing The Red Heart of Russia (1918) about her experiences. She interviewed Lenin, Trotsky, and other Soviet leaders in 1921. From 1918 t0 1921 she was the editor of McCall's Magazine. Beatty worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a writer, and in 1932 authored a short-lived Broadway play, Jamboree. She worked for the National Label Council in the 1930s and did public relations work for social welfare grouns. Beatty began a radio program out of New York City in 1940 which raised more than $300,000 in war bonds.

Beatty married actor William Sauter in 1926. She died in 1947 while still working as a radio show host.
