Biographical Text

Louisa Lee Schuyler was the great-granddaughter of General Philip Schuyler and of Alexander Hamilton. During the Civil War, she was appointed to the position of corresponding secretary in the Woman's Central Association of Relief. In 1873, she helped organize the New York State Charities Aid Association, and then established the first training school for nurses with Bellevue Hospital. In 1907 she was appointed as one of the first trustees of the Russell Sage Foundation. In 1915, Schuyler received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Columbia University.

Schuyler never married and lived with her sister Georgina for most of her life. Schuyler died in 1926.
