Biographical Text

Therese Loeb Schiff was a social welfare activist and philanthropist, working to aid young immigrant women and children. She was born into a family of German Jewish immigrants, and her father was a prominent financier, allowing her family to become part of an elite group of German Jewish financiers. Schiff organized a literary society for wealthy Jewish women and donated thousands of dollars to the National Council of Jewish Women to help young Jewish immigrants who turned to prostitution. In her activism, she lectured for the Consumers League against child labor and the exploitation of women. Schiff also donated three thousand dollars to the Henry Street Settlement in memory of her husband after he died. Schiff was honorary vice president and an advisory member of the Emanuel Sisterhood Of Personal Service, and honorary chair of the women's division of the United Jewish Campaign. When her son, Mortimer, died while serving as national chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, she donated money for a national training center for the organization.

Schiff married Jacob Henry Schiff in 1875. They had two children together. Schiff died in 1933.
