Biographical Text

Granville Stanley Hall, also known as G. Stanley Hall, was a psychologist who focused on child development and evolutionary theory. He graduated from Williams College in 1867, Hall earned the first psychology doctorate awarded in America in 1878, which he received from Harvard University. He then studied at the University of Berlin. Hall became a psychology and English professor at Antioch College. Later, he became a philosophy professor at Williams College and Johns Hopkins University, where he created America's first formal psychology laboratory. In 1887 he founded the American Journal on Psychology; in 1892 he became the first president of the American Psychological Association. From 1889 to 1920 he served as the first president of Clark University. He also established adolescence as an official stage of human development. Hall died in 1924.
