Dear Miss Addams:
A friend of yours happened to drop a word last evening concerning the ill doings of a certain Chicago editor. Pray accept my congratulations. "Woe to you," says the good Book, "when all men speak well of you." Of course I need not tell you how secure you are in the affections of the people. Your work is known, and you are loved and honored for it wherever beats a generous heart.
Believe in the warmth of my unfailing friendship.
Edwin Markham.
To Miss Jane Addams.
