Miss Jane Addams of Hull House, has added her voice to that of Mrs. Nellie [Taylor] Ross former governor Wyoming, that the question of religion in politics should be brought into the open.
Miss Addams, speaking before 600 social workers last night, referred to the candidacy of Governor Al Smith of New York, for the presidency as "a great boon for the country." So far, she said, the so-called tolerance of the electorate has been an avoidance of the issue.
Mrs. Ross, speaking yesterday at Washington, advocated the election of a Catholic, "just to prove that this is in reality a republic in which we live and not one only in name."
Miss Addams said she was hopeful that the decision of Governor Smith as presidential candidate would bring a better understanding of religion and a realization that it had no place in politics.
