Martha Emily Larsen Jahn to Lydia Marie Schmidt, December 23, 1927

December 23rd. 1927.

Miss Lydia Schmidt,
5733 Blackstone Ave.
Chicago.

Dear Miss Schmidt,

I have received your cable and hurry to send you the information for the Nobel peace prize.

Those who have the right to propose candidates are:

Members of Parliaments and Governments of the different countries

Members of the Interparliamentary Council

Members of the International Permanent Peace Bureau in Bern

Members of l'Institut de Droit International

University professors of law, history and philosophy

Persons who have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

The proposals have to be sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Oslo, Norway, before the 1st of February.

As you will know Jane Addams has been proposed several times before, but as a rule most candidates are proposed several times before they get the prize. I enclose a paper which was printed in Sweden 2 years ago and sent in with the proposal. I very much hope you will be able to get several persons of importance in your country to send in proposals. We shall do our best here and I shall again ask Miss Sheepshanks to get other sections to work. Miss Sheepshanks is coming to Norway in a few days.

I am sending you in a special [envelope] a copy in English of the statutes of the Nobel Institution.

I wish you all success with the work.

Yours sincerely,

(signed) MARTHA LARSEN-JAHN

The proposal has of course to contain information about the merits of the candidate.
