Dear Miss [Addams]: --
I have read, with much interest, your address as published in the Hearst papers today.
I have thought much on the problem of crime [control].
Evidently many mistakes are being made.
The United States Government founded on the principle of justice as per the Bible has changed the world from an autocracy to a democracy. [page 2]
While the "golden rule" was the spirit of our national life there was every little crime.
The principle of [making] good by "Doing unto the other fellow as he would do unto you" as per David Harum in the book has killed many an honest conscience.
In the old days the people [were] taught that the king could do no wrong and the rich man of today is trying delegate to himself, in too many [instances], the same [privilege]. [page 3] The teaching by the Socialist and communist that two wrongs make a right has its effect.
[Using?] the words of the late Dr. [Charles] H Parkhurst "an evil can get great enough to take palpable shape in the eye of public favor" and be hard to stop.
[Using?] the words of the late [Dwight] L. Moody "Get right" from the top down.
I believe with the late [Phillips] Brooks that "no sect or ism will assert the victory [page 4] of righteousness over sin in this great world of ours but the simple church of Christ, armed [powerful?] because armed lightly must make the first [entrance] then let us have of laws of denominational Government and each in the way he thinks most divine strive for the perfected dominion of our one great lord."
Religion is being laughed at. We must [make] too many [apologies].
The benefits that the teachings of Christ [page 5] have made possible for the people of today are not being told as they should be.
People are ashamed to be Christians when they should be proud of it.
Another great factor in accounting for crime is "prenatal influence."
I have been a close observer of the Japanese.
They get married and then they are serious and both Mr. & Mrs. get work to make a home and a future for their children. There are few Jap crimes. [page 6]
Thanking you very much and [hoping] you a reward in heaven for your work I am
Yours Truly,
