My dear Mr Johnson

May I thank you for the copy of "God's Trombones" which you so kindly sent me and may I congratulate you upon having written it.

It is a wonderful achievement to have thus preserved in a form of permanent beauty what might have been so easily lost because of its grotesque setting.

You have certainly exercised the genuine office of the poet both in perceiving innate beauty, in retaining the unique quality of a situation while putting it into an imperishable form.

Faithfully yours

Jane Addams
