HULL-HOUSE

CHICAGO
June 1, 1926

My dear Mr. Dodd:

May we again ask your help for a thousand children and three hundred mothers who, without your [cooperation] will have to spend a dreary summer in the congested districts of Chicago.

Hull-House owns seventy-two acres of wooded land -- The Bowen Country Club -- at Waukegan, Ill. It is equipped with playgrounds and a swimming pool as well as with comfortable buildings. A large garden supplies fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers.

The fixed charges of our summer place are met by an endowment and the transportation is given free by the Northwestern Railroad. However, we depend entirely upon contributions of money with which to provide food and supervision.

The Boys Barracks which accommodated sixty boys was destroyed by fire this Spring. On account of the increased cost of construction the insurance on the destroyed building will cover the cost of a new barracks for only thirty-five boys. Unless we can raise sufficient funds, we must say "No" every two weeks to twenty-five eager youngsters who have looked forward with such fine enthusiasm to a vacation in the country.

We are therefore in urgent need of your assistance this summer and trust that you will care to have a part in the work.

Checks should be made payable to Hull-House Association and sent to 800 S. Halsted Street.

Faithfully yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
