My dear Mrs. La Follette,

We were very grateful to you for your telegram which we were able to read at the memorial services held at Hull House for Caroline Hunt. I think you would have liked the service although very simple was full of affection and understanding. After I read ↑something like a burial service↓ from a little book from ↑of↓ the Ethical Society and gave my own reminiscent impressions of her, Dean [Breckinridge] of the University of Chicago, spoke of her professional life and Miss Mary McDowell of her interest in colored people. Miss McDowell thought she had secured a quartette of colored people who sing very well, but they failed to appear and we had not, of course, provided no other music. One of her friends from Evanston, an elderly man who looked like a clergyman, but proved not to be, gave a very sincere prayer at the end of the service. The many friends who were there found that it was a comfort to them. ↑The number of flowers was quite overwhelming.↓

It seems long, dear Mrs. La Follette since I have seen you. I hope some happy chance will enable me to see you soon.

With affectionate greetings to your family, I am

Always devotedly yours,

Jane Addams [signed]
