Dear Miss Addams --
Your letter about the Japanese loan came to me last evening and this morning I talked to my brother about it. He was glad -- of course -- that you [page 2] did not think best to sign Julia Ford's plea.
She knew of that paper of course, since she is an old friend of the family but a woman of intense enthusiasm and fads, just now China is all in all to her.
My brother said he would gladly send you data on the subject as [page 3] he has plenty of it to send you. I am sorry you could not have heard him talk the whole thing over very carefully -- as he did with us the other evening.
My brother was in Japan in October but he absolutely went there for a much needed rest and did not have this loan in mind as some assert.
He told Jack and me the other night when I asked him about it that it was a surprise when the Japanese broached the subject to him, as a possibility, and wished his opinion about it. Then he tried to go over the whole situation with the Japanese and Chinamen he could reach and has since been to Washington to discuss the matter. It was a [written down left margin] great joy to see you again & to be of any help to you. With love Lucy L. Gavit.
