A TRIBUTE TO JANE ADDAMS
William Allen White honored himself by honoring Jane Addams in the tribute he paid to her last week in Chicago, and Chicago did itself honor in the banquet given for Miss Addams, who has been called "Chicago's first citizen." It was well timed, because Miss Addams recently has come in for a good deal of deprecation. Not long ago the national head of the American Legion publicly referred to her in contemptuous terms. Miss Addams has not always followed along with public opinion or popular opinions, but has gone off at a tangent, but probably she has been right as often as those who censured her. Whether this is true or not, it is her great distinction that she has absolute moral courage. With all her independence she is never sensational, notorious or conspicuous nor a publicity seeker. Nothing is further from her character than what the Scriptures term "vain babbling." For women in her generation have possessed her quiet dignity and quiet force. America, in fact, and Americanism are the richer for the life of Jane Addams.
