My dear Miss Addams, --
You will rejoice to know that the American Fund has granted our request for two hundred dollars a month for a year for our printing bill. I am arranging to send the bill each month to the Fund and then get them to forward it each month together with a check to cover it to Mrs Taussig. I have written Mrs Taussig asking her when she receives the check to deposit it and then make out a National check for the same amount and send it on to Geneva.
In this way the National will be paying the printing bill for the International and will justify my sending 7000 copies of the Bulletin to the U.S. each month to be distributed to our local members. I expect to have a conference next Thursday with Hannah Hull and Dorothy Detzer and hope to work out with them some method of distributing the Bulletin that will prevent its being held up as it is at present. The final O.K. copy of the September Bulletin left my hands at the Board meeting Sept. 15th and it is still not out. The thing should be handled as it is in a big news paper office where thousands of papers are folded, stamped, addressed and sent out daily. It is all done by machinery and of course for us to do it by hand in the Washington office is a waste of both time and money.
You will be pleased to know that I saw Mrs Leach before she sailed and she said if I could come to England the first of December she would do all she could to help me with our English group. Also she promised to try and spend a week with me in Geneva. She returns about Christmas to America. She promised me $250 for the National and I am sure she will do even more later.
If you think well of it I want to make a drive every where for International members. If we had four thousand International members it would mean an income of $20,000 and that would run the Geneva office in fine shape without your having to go out begging for money. I want to get out a little circular advertising our International Club ↑House↓ and a monthly International paper which surely ought to be worth five dollars a year. Mrs Pethick Lawrence has promised to help me get a lot of International members in England. [page 2]
I am sailing on the tenth on the Olympic, second cabin. I cabled Vilma Glücklich that if I did not hear from her I would take it that was satisfactory. As I have not heard I suppose it is all right. I have since cabled Madame Duchêne telling her I would be in Paris the seventeenth and eighteenth and ↑was↓ hoping for long conferences with her.
I suppose it will be towards the end of November before I get out the first International Bulletin there are sure to be so many complications with the first issue. Perhaps after that is done, say the first of December, might be a good time to go to England, particularly as Mrs Leach will be there then. If I find there is not enough money in the treasury for this trip, might I raise it or would you prefer to do so. As I remember it the fare from Geneva to London second class is about $25 dollars. I should think [$60] might cover the round trip for I think I will be able to stay at Mrs Lawrence's and my hospitality will thus be provided for.
Do let me know if there are any matters you want especially attended to. I am looking forward to the work and feeling very proud of my job.
Miss Balch was here yesterday seeing Dr Woker off and I had a long talk with Miss Balch about many of our problems.
With a great deal of love to you and looking forward to greeting you in Ireland in July,
Affectionately and devotedly
Madeleine Doty [signed]
