My dear Miss [Addams]:
It is, indeed, with regret that I learn of the uncalled for and malicious attack made by Captain Watkins, recently named National Commander of the Illinois American Legion upon the wonderful work that you are doing at Hull House.
I have known of your work, not intimately in later years so much as in former years, for now more than thirty-three years and I know there is no foundation whatsoever for such a malicious attack. The good you have done is beyond measure of computation. I wish that I might do something to let you know how much it is appreciated by the many people in the United States who have the uplifting view of things, and, also, I wish it were possible for me to do something to assist you in the great work.
You have my most hearty best wishes and I urge you to be cheered on in the good work you are doing, knowing that such sentiments are not those of any large number of people in this great country.
Believe me,
Very sincerely yours,
John H. Gabriel [signed]
