Dear Friend,

I am moved to write to you because you are the one woman in America we all know, & our Prime Minister has cabled a lie.

You know how closely I have [held] in touch with destitution. Keeping watch especially on those driven on to the road. Miners are being driven on to the road. [The] last refuge of the utterly destitute. God spoke to me at Friends' Yearly Meeting, ( I am now a Friend) & told me to go to live among miners. I went at once nearly 3 weeks, & shall be back with them next week.

I have just been reading "Ye wrestle within the rulers of the darkness of this world" "The power of darkness" "The God of this world hath blinded the eyes of them that believe not."

Can you make America believe the real state of things?

The darkness deepens. Our Poor Law is breaking down.

The destitute are being refused relief.

The reason for the stubbornness of the miners [page 2] is that they cannot see how to keep their homes going on less than they have been having.

"As well starve on our feet as slave working” one said to me.

They cannot see how to under worse conditions.

The masters cannot see how to carry on -- They are mostly no longer individuals, but companies bound to pay dividends.

The managers can't see how to "[reorganize]" because of restriction of capital.

And our government is "befogged."

They say it is legal to offer a miners wife & children the Workhouse! To refuse relief to women & children.

And the children! They are the future nation. Boys cannot get work.

And "the rulers of the darkness of this world" do not see. They do not see how life is more than money.

Can you make America see what is really happening?

Yours in Church service
Mary Higgs

P.S I know you have been in Ireland lately & may not have returned so send this through the W.I.L.
