July 9, 1926.
Dear Miss Addams:
I have not replied to your letter of June 17th because of knowledge of the fact that you are in Europe. You asked that I call you up at the Hotel Belmont on Friday afternoon the 18th. Your letter was dated the 17th and mailed June 18th at 4:30 P.M. at the Grand Central Station. This will explain to you why I could not reach you by telephone, though I did make the effort.
I fully understand your reluctance to be a party to a law suit. We are going after this precious faker, Captain Hopkins, on our own account and also after his camouflaged organization. We shall not make any effort to sue the Chicago Tribune, as their printing of the story was probably accidental and they have shown a disposition to retract and feel sorry for it.
Sincerely yours,
