My dear Mrs Hull
We had a most interesting day with the Committee in Haiti. We had only 6 hours but they had arranged the time so splendidly that we saw "both sides" as it were -- including the President himself.
I talked to Emily Balch about the $50.00 a month for [Madeleine] Doty's services as editor, she agreed with me that it had been promised but that M. D. thought Mrs Spencer would secure it.
As Mrs Spencer hasn't been able to, I really think that the U.S.A. section ought to, for each member gets a copy of the Pax as they did when [page 2] M. D. edited the "Pax Special" in this country. I will write her about it and I suspect that has been one "reason of her discontent." Emily Balch also thought Miss Surles might help -- I am not so convinced of that but of course have no definite objection to her going. She ↑(Miss Surles)↓ called me in N.Y. and I said that Mde Ramondt as financial secy was really responsible for keeping the accounts [etc].
I am awfully sorry for this little sense of friction which I have never had with a secy before.
I do hope all goes well with your grandson, please give my love also to the family. Always devotedly yours Jane Addams
P.S. We are having a delightful cruise.
