FRIENDSHIP
You who make our miseries
Disappear half,
Come and make us live as brothers,
Pure charm of Friendship.
What a spectacle on earth
If the world loved your laws!
No more troubles, no more wars,
And peace under all roofs!
Speaks to souls too haughty
And submit them to your law.
Come and arrange under your banner
And the peoples and the kings.
INTRODUCTION BY “LES RAYS” SCHOOL
(THE FELLOWSHIP SCHOOL)
It is not a theatrical performance, it is not dances, in the sense that we give to this term, that we must expect from us. We are a school, and not a school that specifically cultivates the arts. The idea that is the basis of our school. it is to contribute to the advent of a better world, by raising and making children from different countries work together to help them learn to [know] each other and love each other. This [idea], that of fraternity and mutual aid which must pacify minds and bring about an era without violence, is the one which brings together all the members of our company.
In this performance for which the city of Arles has [want us?] granted the unique stage of its Ancient Theater, and the youth of Arles its assistance, we will try to express this idea and to evoke Peace regenerative of the world. At the beginning you will see the ancient inhabitants of the country, the Greeks and the Romans. They dance and play among the ruins. joyful to see again the places where their lives passed, amazed at the changes that have occurred. Then they rest, and then terrifying images of massacres appear before their eyes. which fill them with distress. Suddenly, between two columns Peace appears. Everyone turns to her, offers her flowers, dances in front of her. But the fear of horror shows returns once again and to the warring nations they show Peace. They ask her to intervene to appease the hatred. Peace beckons them to sit down and look at the people who are gathering. From all sides they arrive: the Redskins who bury the ax and smoke the peace pipe, the Japanese, the Italians, the Poles, the Spanish, the Cambodians, the Germans, the English, the Provençals and others. The dances finished, the elders stand up. They talk with the newcomers, delighted with their art, their dances. And they encourage them to approach Peace. Everyone comes to her and joins one another, in a feeling of friendship. The Greeks perform a triumphal dance under the blessing of Peace. And as if an order emanated from this white figure crowned with an olive tree. all the nations surround him. offer him garlands and sing together the song of Friendship in which we invite the honorable assistants to take part. Dear Madam,
No, I won't be able to be with you, and I regret it. You know the beautiful country where you are. About thirty years ago, I spent these Easter weeks in St-Rémy-lès-Tarascon, and I went to see Mistral in Maillane. You would have enjoyed repeating this spring pilgrimage with your little springs — your young troop —. But I'm kept here by my work, which doesn't have holidays. Please accept all my regrets and my fraternal sympathy. Your devoted, Romain Rolland.
