My dear Mr. Baldwin:

I was very much pleased when [Lewis] Gannett told me the other night that he thought the protest about the political prisoners in Russia has not yet been sent. I have really been quite uncomfortable about it, feeling a little as one does when one criticizes trade unions during a strike. They are probably doing wrong but so many people are telling them so for so many reasons that one hates to add his voice to the general clamor.

If it is not too late I would rather not sign it as you sent it to me and if you have [rewritten] it perhaps you will give me another chance before it is sent.

Faithfully yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
