April 4, 1925.

Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.

My dear Miss Addams:

Your two letters from Mexico were duly received. I have appointed delegates to the American Academy of Political and Social Science, as you requested. I have also read with interest Dorothy Evans' letter. Yes, I remember her very well indeed, and liked her so much. It is such a problem just now to take care of a person of that kind over here for six months. However, I am relieved that you wrote her as you did.

Mrs. Lewis is taking to Mme. Ramondt an invitation from us semi-nationally, to come and visit for some months. This is as much as we can manage in that line next fall, I fear. Mme. Ramondt now writes to know whether she shall bring a young girl with her who has slides of the devastated area of France. Although her accompanying talk may be good, it seems to me a subject which is a little out of date. I shall write her to talk further with Mrs. Lewis about this, but shall try to discourage it I think unless you decide that I should not. [page 2]

We are all anticipating the annual meeting. I am really mortified to tell you, however, that I am laid by in the intervening weeks as far as work is concerned. I have had a wretched time with my ear and am concentrating on getting strength enough to have my tonsils out, which are said to be the seat of my trouble. The Doctor almost promises that I can surely go to Chicago.

Martha Speakman is to marry Hollingsworth Wood on the 23rd. It was looming up in my mind last fall and that is why I could not enthuse more about our urging Martha for our headquarters in Washington.

I am sure you have had an interesting trip and we shall love to hear about it. This time last year we were eagerly preparing for our foreign guests. Our weeping cherry is coming out in bloom now a little early, just as it was last year when the delegates arrived.

Hoping that you did not work too hard on your trip to have gained much benefit, I am

Always affectionately yours,

enc
