My Dear Mrs Ewing,

I did not know until the paper came from Lake Forest on Saturday morning, that you had lost your father [although] of course I know how desperately ill he had been. You must have thought me very remiss not to have written you for as you know I have always very much admired your parents and could not in any event be indifferent to a sorrow which came to you. [page 2]

I had hoped to see you on Sunday and am more sorry than ever that Mrs Bowen hurried us off an [hour] too soon.

Will you please give my love to your mother and assure her of my sincere sympathy.

There must be a comfort for all of you, in the thought of such a fine long life so worthily lived.

Hoping to see you soon I am
Always affectionately yours,
Jane Addams
