June 22nd, 1925.
Dear Lady Aberdeen,
I am very glad to learn that you wish to continue the joint work of international women's [organizations], so successfully begun with regard to the Advisory Committee of the League of Nations.
I heartily agree with your suggestion for the formation of a Joint Committee to deal with the work of women in the different bodies of the League of Nations, and I am writing to the Chairman of our British Section, Miss Kathleen Courtney, asking her to represent us on it, or, if this is impossible, to nominate some one else to do so.
As our British Section has been studying the question of the appointment of a woman Assessor on the Slavery Committee, I shall leave it to them to make a nomination for this purpose.
As to the Committee on the Codification of International Law, it seems to me that the most naturally indicated name is that of Chrystal Macmillan, Chairman of our Joint Committee on the Nationality of Married Women, as this special question has been placed on the Agenda of the Committee on the Codification of International Law. [page 2]
Our experience in the case of the Advisory Committee has shown that
1. a joint request from the international [organizations] is more effective than separate ones;2. the Council of the League of Nations does not separately consider the question of principle, but simply appoints the Assessor nominated if the right of representation is admitted.
Therefore I beg to suggest that our Joint Committee should meet very soon, agree on the persons to be nominated, and draft the joint appeal. If it is so desired, a joint delegation could present it at Geneva, as several of the international [organizations] have their representatives here.
Hoping that the permanent [cooperation] of our [organizations] will strengthen the influence of women on the policy of the League of Nations, I am
Sincerely and respectfully yours,
General Secretary.
