Description

The Chicago Municipal Lodging House was established in 1901 in response to the number of homeless men on Chicago streets. Though it closed in 1918 after WWI, it was reopened in 1923 after the publishing of Citizen Hobo: How a Century of Homelessness Shaped America. The lodging house was eventually placed under the control of the Department of Public Welfare.
