Biographical Text

Helmuth von Moltke, born in 1800, was the chief of the Prussian Army for thirty years. He is often referred to Moltke the Elder to distinguish him from his nephew of the same name. Moltke was a disciple of Carl von Clausewitz, and developed his own theory on war, expanded in the book Instructions for Large Unit Commanders, 1869. He died in 1891 in Berlin.
