Biographical Text

Dr. Joseph Stolz attended Syracuse public schools while growing up. He then attended the Hebrew Union College and the University of Cincinnati, graduating from both in 1884. In 1882, Stolz was officiated and became a rabbi, and he was first posted at the B'nai Israel Congregation in Little Rock, Arkansas. He then joined the Zion Congregation of Chicago in 1887. When many Jews began moving from the West Side of Chicago to the South Side, Stolz formed his own congregation in the South Side, known as Isaiah Congregation. In 1890, Hebrew Union College granted Stolz a Doctor of Divinity degree. Stolz was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Protective Association of Chicago, and he and Jane Addams were both Vice Presidents of the Association. Stolz and Addams were also both associate editors of Unity magazine.

Stolz married Blanche A. Rauh in 1890. They had three children: Edna, Regina, and Leon. In 1937, Stolz fell and broke his hip, and he lived the rest of his life as an invalid; Stolz died in 1941.
