Biographical Text

Philip Davis was born in 1876 in Gordno, Russia, in what is today Belarus. Davis emigrated to the United States in 1890 and his family settled in Chicago, IL. Davis became a pupil under Jane Addams during his two years at the University of Chicago before finishing out his schooling at Harvard. He continued to study law at Boston University.

While Davis had many talents, he is remembered for his passion for labor reform. He worked with the Boston School Systems in licensing minors to work, served many years as Director of the Civic Service House, a settlement house in the north end of Boston, and organizing for the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union. He died November 20, 1951 in his Boston apartment.
