My dear Miss Addams:
When Anna and I got home last Saturday from California she found among her mail a letter from Pond & Pond enclosing architects' certificate on account in the amount of $1000.00. I think Anna wrote you from Lake Tahoe her impression has been that Mrs. Lillie would pay one-half of the total expenses in the matter of the alterations in Miss Starr's apartment, which would leave $500.00 due from Anna at this time.
I suggested to Anna that instead of sending a check direct to Pond & Pond it would be better to make the check payable to Hull House and I, according, enclose herewith my check for this amount. My reason for doing this is that since the alterations are for the ultimate benefit of Hull House, it will be proper to take account of this amount in our income tax return for this year and for the purpose of the income tax return our records will be in better shape if payment is made to Hull House direct instead of to Pond & Pond or to the contractor. I hope you won't mind being put to the extra bother of banking this check and drawing against it. I also enclose the architects' certificate which should be returned to Pond & Pond with your check.
I hope you understand this matter. I am also writing today to Pond & Pond and to Miss Starr explaining the situation. Anna hoped she could reach Mrs. Lillie last Sunday, but found that she was at Woods Hole. However, it seems clear from one of Miss Starr's letters to Anna that Mrs. Lillie will pay half of this expense and if that isn't Mrs. Lillie's understanding we will take the matter up further.
I hope you had a good summer. Anna joins with me in sincere regards to you.
Sincerely yours,
