Biographical Text

Josephine Clara Goldmark was the Chairman of the committee on labor laws for the National Consumers League. She was an investigator of labor conditions and advocate for better working conditions for workers, specifically women, and children. Goldmark conducted research with Florence Kelley which went towards the winning "Brandeis Brief" with her brother-in-law, Louis D. Brandeis, in the Muller v. Oregon case, which was on the impact of long working hours on women. In 1912, she published Fatigue and Efficiency: A Study in Industry, a book about the consequences of harsh labor conditions on the human body and on society.

In World War I, she worked as an executive secretary of the Committee of Women in Industry, and later she managed the Women’s Service Section of the US Railroad Administration. Goldmark also served as the executive secretary of the Committee for the Study of Nursing Education, where she advocated for better education and training for nurses. Goldmark died in 1950.
