Biographical Text

Oscar Straus was born in Germany. When his family immigrated to the United States, they settled in Georgia. In his adulthood, Straus moved to New York and graduated from Columbia College in 1871 and Columbia Law School in 1873. He then practiced law for a time, then worked as a merchant. In 1887 became United States Minister to the Ottoman Empire. He served two terms, one from 1887 to 1889 and one from 1898 to 1899. In 1902, Straus became a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, and in 1906 he became the United States Secretary of Commerce and Labor under President Theodore Roosevelt, also serving as the head of the U.S. Bureau of Immigration, where he enforced the Anarchist Exclusion Act. From 1909 to 1910, Straus was the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, and in 1915 he was the chairman of the public service commission of New York State. He was also president of the American Jewish Historical Society.

Straus married Sarah Straus in 1884. Straus died in 1926.
