Annie Frederika Furuhjelm to Emily Greene Balch, January 3, 1920 (excerpt)

Out of letter from Annie Furuhjelm.

We have a very small group of W.I.L.P.F. in [Helsinki] and we have not been able of any educational work, as owing to the constant threat of the Bolsheviki, we feel at all times that a conflict is in the reach of possibilities, and we for our part dare not think of disarmament in this part of the world.

The bare necessities of life have ten doubled. Just now the whole of Europe is in a cloud, we have not come to the end of our sufferings, and I do not see anywhere a fine ↑true↓ spirit of conciliation. The peace settlement will not bring it I am afraid.
