Lecture to the Henry George Association, October 29, 1903 (excerpts)

Miss Jane Addams pleaded for a universal disarmament of nations and the substitution of moral influence for war at a meeting of the Henry George Association last night at Handel Hall.

"It is illogical for America to follow in the footsteps of England by conquering people to become a world wide power," she said. "Our aim should be to educate, to set free the latent energies, and develop resources."

Many in the audience took exception with Miss Addams' views.

"China never has believed in war," said one, "and has become the prey of other nations."

"But China has not the moral energy I spoke of," was the reply.

Several expressed the belief that the warlike spirit was due to patriotic sentiment and one would be impossible without the other.
