Biographical Text

Joseph Gurney Cannon was a Republican member of the House of Representatives. He was speaker of the House from 1903-1911, and he garnered so much respect from his political career that he featured on Time magazine's first cover on March 3, 1923.

Cannon married Mary P. Reed in 1862. They had two daughters together. Cannon died in 1926.
