My dear Mrs. Lane:
I should like very much to accept your invitation but there are two reasons against doing so.
First I am rather [skeptical] as to the value of public meetings on peace just now. Secondly I may be in New York the middle of January when we plan to have our first meeting of the new Board and I am sure I could not come again so soon.
I am sure you know that the New York Branch has my very best wishes and I am sorry to be of so little use to it.
With all good wishes for the success of your new plan, I am,
Faithfully yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
