Anonymous ("A mother") to Jane Addams, 1917

My Dear Miss [Addams]:

Am so glad we have some noble and kind hearted people left in this country, bestirring themselves in regard to this unnecessary war. Oh, if only more of such work had been done sooner and prevented all this, and many many mothers are praying that God will prevent the Leaders of our nation from sending our sons to the trenches in Europe to be slain, not for our country, no, [page 2] but, for the rich and England if only the mothers could declare themselves what an uprising there would be women of the future ought to refuse to bear children for war purposes.

I wish you well in all your work for peace and wish we had many more such heroic women in this world if we did, we would not be at war today.
