October 28, 1916.
Dear Miss Addams: --
The statements, together with your letter of October 25, only reached me today after the Wilson announcement had been printed and distributed. The telegram was in the nick of time, and we were heartily glad of your name and of Miss McDowell’s.
In any event, I think the committee which prepared the statement would have hesitated to have added much that was specific about President Wilson, for we found a considerable amount of luke-warmness; and to have said anything about the Progressive Party would have complicated matters, for we found that a rather astonishing number had been Democratic for some time and voted for Wilson in 1912. This applies, perhaps, even more strongly to the larger number of social workers who will vote for Wilson but who did not think it expedient to sign the call.
