Biographical Text

Alzina Parsons Stevens was an activist and journalist. At the age of 13, Parsons lost her right index finger while working at a textile mill. Stevens became a printer, and an active labor organizer, working with the Knights of Labor. In 1892 she joined Hull-House, one of the few women there who had actual experience working in factories. She worked with Florence Kelley to pass the 1893 Illinois state law limiting women and children to an eight hour work day. The law was repealed only two years later in 1895 after lobbying by the Illinois Manufacturers' Association. Stevens went on to become the first probation officer at the Cook County Juvenile Court. Stevens died in 1900.
