Biographical Text

William James has been called the "Father of American Psychology." He was the first in the United States to offer a course in philosophy. James was one of the founders of functional psychology and developer of the philosophical perspective known as radical empiricism. he wrote many publications, including The Principles of Psychology, Essays in Radical Empiricism, and The Varieties of Religious Experience. James taught many subjects at Harvard, including physiology, anatomy, psychology, and philosophy. In his later years, James developed cardiac pain, and he traveled to Europe to try unsuccessful experimental cures.

James married Alice Howe Gibbens in 1878. They had 5 children together. James died in 1910.
