Biographical Text

Born Emmeline Goulden, she married Richard Pankhurst in 1878, a barrister who supported woman suffrage. They had five children, including suffragists Christabel, Sylvia, and Adela Pankhurst. Together, Richard and Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women’s Franchise League in 1889, which secured the right for married women to vote in local elections. She and Christabel Pankhurst formed the Woman’s Social and Political Union in 1903, a radical organization, best known for violent protests, destruction of property, and confrontations with the police. With the advent of World War I, Pankhurst abandoned militant suffrage activities to support the British war effort, supporting women’s war work and encouraging men to volunteer for military service. After the British granted women over 30 the right to vote, Pankhurst turned the WSPU into the Woman’s Party, which sought to promote women’s equality. Pankhurst turned to the Conservative Party near the end of her life, dying shortly before women were granted the franchise on the same terms as men.
