Biographical Text

George Duddleston was a Democratic alderman in Chicago. He was born in England but moved to Chicago as a child. As a young man, Duddleston began as a butcher at the Smithfield Market and ran the business continuously for over thirty years. Meanwhile, he was also a member of the Board of Bridewell Inspectors. He served as an alderman on the Chicago city council from 1897 until 1901 for the city's Eleventh Ward. Over the course of these two terms, Duddleston helped obtain track elevation for Chicago's up-and-coming railway. In 1902, he secured the Democratic nomination for State Treasurer in Illinois, though he lost the election. Later, in 1904, Duddleston was appointed a trustee for the Chicago Board of Education. The following year, in 1905, he ran for president of the Board of Education. Many, like Jane Addams, did not support Duddleston in the race and urged others to vote against him, ultimately losing the election.

Duddleston married Ellen T. Doherty in 1874. The couple had two children. In 1913, Duddleston was remarried to Loretta Partenhejmer. Duddleston committed suicide in 1914.
