Dear Aunt Jane,

Thank you so much for the book-- I wanted it more than I have wanted anything for a long while-- Grandfather is the one figure who stands out distinctly in my childhood memories. Of course he was gone long before I was big enough to realize how wonderful he really was -- but the child ideal was after all wonderfully true -- for he was so very big to me and grave and I was always wondering what his thoughts must be -- and yet I was so absolutely certain always of his love and that if I did dare to speak to him a certain look would come into his eyes and I felt that he was never putting me off or only seeming to listen.
