Biographical Text

Herman Justi grew up in Kentucky and entered the hardware business. He settled in Nashville, Tennessee, where he became a partner in a wholesale iron and hardware company. He later became a bank president in Nashville, but after experiencing some financial difficulties in the 1890s, he moved to southern Illinois and worked in the coal and salt mining business. This work led him to organize the Illinois Coal Operators' Association, and he became its first commissioner. He worked to establish trade agreements between coal companies and union minors. In 1901, he testified before a Senate industrial commission on the conditions of the coal mining industry in Illinois, and he was involved with the American Association for Labor Legislation.

Justi was twice married and had one step daughter. He died suddenly due to hemorrhage of the lungs at his home in Highland Park on January 1, 1909.
