Biographical Text

Mary E. Beedy was an advocate for better education for young women. She studied at Antioch College and moved to Chicago. There, along with Rebecca S. Rice, she founded the Girl's Higher School in 1875. The school was both a day and boarding school that was meant to groom young girls for college. Beedy and Rice served as the school's co-principals. Additionally, she was a public speaker, frequently addressing crowds on the topic of young women's education in America. Beedy was a member of Chicago's Woman's Club and supported Addams' settlement work.

Beedy died in 1910.
