Biographical Text

Vida Dutton Scudder was one of the first women admitted into Oxford's graduate program. She later became a professor of English literature at Wellesley College. Scudder had maintained a connection to the Episcopalian church and continued to advocate the Christian message until she passed. Scudder is honored with a feast day on the Episcopal Church's liturgical calendar on October 10. She also helped co-found the third settlement house in the United States, Denison House of Boston, with Helena Dudley and Emily Greene Balch in 1890. She served as its primary administrator from 1893-1913. Scudder died in 1954.

Scudder lived with Florence Converse from 1919 until Converse's death.
