Biographical Text

Maynard M. Metcalf studied at Oberlin College and in 1893 he earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He was the head of Goucher College's biology department and later became the head of Oberlin College's zoology department. In 1919 he was the chair of the Ohio Academy of Science. He was the author of over 150 publications on evolution and economic and philosophical questions. Metcalf was the only expert on evolution allowed to testify in person during the Scopes Trial.

Metcalf married Ella W Metcalf in 1890. They had one daughter. Metcalf died in 1940.
