Biographical Text

Charles Gilkey had received both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Divinity from the Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1910 by the Hyde Park Baptist Church and served as a pastor there for 18 years. From 1919-1929, Gilkey was a Trustee of the University of Chicago. In 1928 he was appointed as Dean of the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. Gilkey was also an Associate Dean of the Divinity School. At the Divinity School.

Gilkey married Geraldine Gunsaulus Brown in 1915. The couple had one child, Langdon Brown Gilkey, a notable theologian. Gilkey died in 1968
