Biographical Text

Nathan Merriam was a leading businessman and active politician in Nebraska. He was the president of his grain exportation business, Merriam & Millard Elevator company. He owned the first grain elevator in Omaha and he was an active member of the Omaha grain exchange. Merriam was a delegate at both the Republican National Convention and Nebraska's state Republican Convention. Additionally, in 1912, he was a delegate for the Progressive National Convention and also served as the party's national committeeman. In 1914, the Progressive Party nominated Merriam to be their Congressional candidate, though he lost the election after going on a European vacation for most of his campaign season.

Merriam married Alice Theodora Gale Merriam in 1888. They had two daughters: Mildred and Nathalie. Merriam died in 1918.
